Is God Pro-Slavery?
The fact that the Bible gives clear instructions for the treatment of slaves is not the same thing as the Bible arguing in favour of human slavery. The gospel is a gospel of freedom, and the gospel also shows us how Jesus chose slavery to win our freedom.
The Exclusive God
When we feel abandoned or forgotten by God, we tend to revert to the gods of our age and our culture for our comfort and security. But like he did with the Israelites, God continues to be faithful to us even when our faith weakens.
God’s Law Still Matters, But Not Why You Think
Many people, including many Christians, perceive God as an angry, vengeful figure, enforcing His laws with strict punishment. This view often leads many to reject this God. However, this view is different from what we see in scripture.
The Call to Discipleship
As we continue our series looking into the vision God has called us to as a church; Joe Lavers takes us through the topic of Discipleship, challenging us to reflect on whether we disciples or just supporters of Jesus. He also takes us through the practical steps involved in becoming a disciple of Jesus.
Foundations for Serving Our City
As we continue our look at Grace City Church’s vision for the coming years, Francis Holtken helps us understand the heart and the scriptural basis behind serving our city with a particular focus on serving those in need.
The Vision of Grace City Church
Sovereign Over The Human Heart
Exodus 6 ends with Moses telling God he is unfit and unqualified. God's reply to Moses is strikingly gracious - 'See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh.' Our world grants a qualification to those who work hard and earn it, whereas God freely qualifies the unworthy.
God Qualifies the Unworthy
Exodus 6 ends with Moses telling God he is unfit and unqualified. God's reply to Moses is strikingly gracious - 'See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh.' Our world grants a qualification to those who work hard and earn it, whereas God freely qualifies the unworthy.
Depression & God’s Grace
There’s no shortage of stigma around depression, including within the church. In Exodus 6:9, we read that God’s people couldn’t hear God’s voice because of their ‘broken spirit’ (depression) and ‘harsh slavery’ (oppression). God responds not with a rebuke but with kindness, faithfully continuing his plan to free his people. God promises the same for those who have placed their faith in Jesus. There is grace and mercy for those who are depressed.
What God Is Doing In Your Life
How would you describe what God is doing in your life? Maybe you feel like he is doing a lot, or wonder whether he is doing anything at all. But what if we were to ask God to describe what he is doing in the lives of his people? How would he answer that question? Exodus 6 contains that answer and gives us many reasons to be encouraged, excited, and grateful.
God’s Kindness in Confronting Sin
Exodus is full of surprises, but chapter 4 has a different type of surprise when God went to put Moses to death. Why would God confront Moses like this? Wasn’t Moses the one God had chosen to free his people from slavery? This story might catch us off guard, but it’s actually a story of immeasurable kindness and transforming grace.
When God Says Yes but Moses (& We) Say No
God clearly tells Moses the elders of Israel will listen to him. Moses says they won’t. What’s the real reason behind Moses’s questioning of God, and how will God respond? Is it possible to miss out on part of what God has for us when we tell God, ‘No, that’s not how it will work.’
