Pray Then Like This: Deliver Us From Evil
Pray Then Like This: Lead Us Not Into Temptation
The trap of sin and death is set with the bait of our own desires, including our good desires. When Jesus teaches us to pray that we would not be lead into temptation, he is teaching us to pray for the grace to resist going any further when we find ourselves being tempted. We need the help of Jesus; the one who was tempted in every way we are, yet who was faithful in every way.
Pray Then Like This: Forgive Us Our Debts, As We Forgive Our Debtors
Jesus speaks about the cost of refusing to forgive, but will we listen?
Pray Then Like This: Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread
We have our life goals, whether it’s a one year plan, five years, 10, or more. We want to know what our future holds, and to be secure when it arrives. However, Jesus teaches us to pray for our daily bread; the basic necessities of life.
Pray Then Like This: Thy Will Be Done
If there is one word that describes what God’s will looks like in our lives, that word would be obedience. But we get nervous around that word, because we usually associate it with rule keeping and performance.
Pray Then Like This: Your Kingdom Come
To pray, ‘Your kingdom come,’ is a prayer of defiance against the kingdom followers of Jesus once belonged to, a prayer of allegiance to the King and kingdom followers of Jesus have been transferred to, and a prayer of longing for heaven to invade earth.
Pray Then Like This: Hallowed Be Thy Name
What does it mean to ‘hallow’ the name of God, and why do we struggle with it so much? There is something built into each one of us that is more driven towards making a name for ourselves rather than God. Praying as Jesus taught us to pray, ‘Hallowed be your name,’ helps reorient us to both God’s glory and priorities for our lives.
Pray Then Like This: Praying As Children
The first two words of the Lord's Prayer clearly establish the true identity of followers of Jesus; together, they are children of God. Praying like a child means coming to God as we are, with all of our fears, doubts, and insecurities.
Pray Then Like This: Introduction
Jesus never spoke about prayer as an optional activity for his followers. Rather, he took time to teach them how to pray. It’s for this reason that the Lord’s Prayer is perhaps better understood as The Disciple’s Prayer. This sermon is the first in a series on how Jesus taught us to pray.
