How to See God
We can easily see sacrifice in the Old Testament as a gruesome, even archaic, ritual that seems completely removed from our modern sensibilities. However, the sacrifices we see in those ancient texts, including the book of Exodus, crucially symbolize future redemption through Jesus Christ, enabling the Israelites (and us) to approach God, see God, and even feast in God’s presence.
Is God Pro-Slavery?
The fact that the Bible gives clear instructions for the treatment of slaves is not the same thing as the Bible arguing in favour of human slavery. The gospel is a gospel of freedom, and the gospel also shows us how Jesus chose slavery to win our freedom.
The Exclusive God
When we feel abandoned or forgotten by God, we tend to revert to the gods of our age and our culture for our comfort and security. But like he did with the Israelites, God continues to be faithful to us even when our faith weakens.
God’s Law Still Matters, But Not Why You Think
Many people, including many Christians, perceive God as an angry, vengeful figure, enforcing His laws with strict punishment. This view often leads many to reject this God. However, this view is different from what we see in scripture.
God is Both Terrifying and Tender
God is both terrifying and tender, and that's a good thing. God's holiness shines a spotlight on our uncleanliness, causing us to shrink back in fright. But God, in his grace and kindness, doesn't leave us cowering in fear. By sending Jesus as our Redeemer, he made a way for our guilt to be dealt with. In doing so, we who were dead in our sin are made righteous by Jesus. We who once cowered in fear are invited to draw near to God as he draws near to us.
God Promises Us Closeness, Not Always Comfort
In Exodus 19, God speaks about his faithfulness to his people and how he cares for them like an eagle cares for its young. This may seem rather sentimental initially, but this brief comment is loaded with meaning. Like an eagle parent, sometimes God nudges us out of the nest at the cost of our comfort. But it is always for our good, and he promises to always be with us.
God’s Grace to Outsiders
Our Grumbling & The Grace of God
The Exodus story is our story, including what we see as we continue our series by looking at Exodus 16 - struggles with freedom, the dangers of nostalgia and grumbling, and the unwavering grace and mercy of God.
God Qualifies the Unworthy
Exodus 6 ends with Moses telling God he is unfit and unqualified. God's reply to Moses is strikingly gracious - 'See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh.' Our world grants a qualification to those who work hard and earn it, whereas God freely qualifies the unworthy.
Depression & God’s Grace
There’s no shortage of stigma around depression, including within the church. In Exodus 6:9, we read that God’s people couldn’t hear God’s voice because of their ‘broken spirit’ (depression) and ‘harsh slavery’ (oppression). God responds not with a rebuke but with kindness, faithfully continuing his plan to free his people. God promises the same for those who have placed their faith in Jesus. There is grace and mercy for those who are depressed.
What God Is Doing In Your Life
How would you describe what God is doing in your life? Maybe you feel like he is doing a lot, or wonder whether he is doing anything at all. But what if we were to ask God to describe what he is doing in the lives of his people? How would he answer that question? Exodus 6 contains that answer and gives us many reasons to be encouraged, excited, and grateful.
God’s Kindness in Confronting Sin
Exodus is full of surprises, but chapter 4 has a different type of surprise when God went to put Moses to death. Why would God confront Moses like this? Wasn’t Moses the one God had chosen to free his people from slavery? This story might catch us off guard, but it’s actually a story of immeasurable kindness and transforming grace.
